Who we are and what we do

Founded by Craig and Sue, SmileFactor10 is a group of kite flying friends based in the north west of England. The team includes Pat and Jenny who organise the St Anne's Kite Festival, Dave Holt, Mark Jones, Dixie Pixel, Dazzz, Dave and Lynne, and CBob.

How it all began…

On a Sunday drive in 2006 we stumbled across the Catch The Wind Kite Festival in Morecambe. The sky was filled with a colourful assortment of birds, butterflies, sea creatures, but it was a big black and white dog (proving difficult to fly in a light wind) that really caught our eye.

We watched in awe for a few hours, and willed the dog owner on, before taking a trip to the festival kite stall. Neither of us had flown a kite before but when we spotted a miniature version of the big dog we knew that was the kite for us. We bought all the bits and pieces, got some professional instruction on how it all went together and headed home to start our new adventure.

Within a few weeks we had purchased the next-size-up dog which we happily flew with the little dog for a couple of years until a chance meeting with the original dog owner. We completed the set of three dogs with our first "big" kite and SmileFactor10 was born. Today we fly kites of all shapes and sizes at kite festivals and events across the UK and beyond.

Out and About

As kite enthusiasts we love to fly whenever and wherever we can. The beach at Arnside and Kendal Castle are our local flying sites but you will also find us throughout the year at kite festivals, music festivals, car shows, agricultural shows, food festivals and more... wind permitting.

Our first SmileFactor10 event in our home town of Kendal, Kites at The Castle, in 2011 was a huge success with around 1000 people joining us for the two day event to fly kites, parachute their teddys, and watch the professional kite displays. The weather was kind and the skies above Kendal Castle and Kendal United Junior Football Club were filled with colour as kites of all shapes and sizes delighted visitors over the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend.

In a packed summer schedule, 2014 saw us take our first steps into Europe at the Berck Sur Mer International Kite Festival in France. We also travelled from Portsmouth International Kite Festival on the south coast of England to the very top of Scotland on consecutive weekends, and hopped over the water to Northern Ireland and the Giant's Causeway!

Entering the world stage in February 2016, we joined flyers from across the globe in the desert at Bnaider. Annually, the Alfarsi International Kite Festival in Kuwait hosts some of the greatest names in the kite world with flyers travelling to Kuwait from over 15 countries. SmileFactor10 would like to say a big thank you to the Al Farsi Kite Team for inviting us to represent England in 2016 & 2017. We are both honoured and delighted.

International adventures at the end of 2017 and early 2018 took SmileFactor10 to the Xiamen Kite Festival in China, Satun Kite Festival in Thailand, Pasir Gudang Kite Festival in Malaysia and Berck Kite Festival in northern France. Wonderful new experiences and the opportunity to meet kite flyers from around the world, making lots of new friends.

The Kites

Over the years our kite collection has grown not only in size but also in scale with our first giant kite being added in 2012 - a Peter Lynn gecko measuring nearly 100ft. Once Craig got to grips with an industrial sewing maching there was no stopping him, he designed and built a 32ft hippo, followed by a giant manta ray (lovingly handcrafted from tents left behind at Solfest Music Festival) and a record-breaking-size purple teddy bear called Oscar in 2014.

New kites for 2015 included a red manta ray, multi-coloured rainbow cuttlefish, and our biggest kite to date - a 120ft octopus (previously owned by the Al Farsi Kite Team) - all designed and built by Peter Lynn Kites, New Zealand.

2016 - 2017 saw us add a giant red and black guppy fish and two kites by English designers and makers - a 45ft scoober diver by Martin Lester, and a gorgeous phoenix kite by Karl Longbottom.

At the end of 2017 we became the extremely proud owners of one-of-only-six super-ultra-light manta ray kites in the world - perfect for very light wind days and proving to be the star of the show on more than one occasion. A 42ft whale shark, purchased during our adventures to China, completed the 2017 kite buys.
